INDEPENDENCE DAY 31 August 1962 A Play by Owen Baptiste is ATribute to Trinidad and Tobago. It was written for the Trinidad Express Newspapers 25th Anniversary Celebrations on June 6th 1992 by the author who was then its Editor in Chief and Managing Director. Independence Day The Play, offers an excellent opportunity for students and lovers of History to relive the pre and post Colonial periods of political and social change in the Caribbean or West Indies. There is opportunity also for artists, musicians and dramatists to bring to life the colourful characters of the past. Not only are there possibilities for set designers but the innate Carnival costumery and music can be brought to bear on interpretation. Ghostly figures of the past like Christopher Columbus and the Spanish, French and British colonial aristocracy can be garbed in symbolic white and contrasted with the more contemporary colourful periods. For themes and branding, ideas can encompass areas of say the boats that arrived like the Spanish flotilla, English battleships and boats of the Middle Passage that brought the enslaved African and the indentured East Indians to the West. Costumes can play on the head dress, flags and behaviour patterns like speech and attitudes of foppery at the top to the uninhibited freedoms displayed at the bottom of the social rungs.
